Easy Tips for Strong Natural Nails

With this time of quarantine, my self-care routine has been on point. With essentially all the time in the world, my skin has been loving the extra TLC; although my nails, not so much. My nails became so grown-out, those memes were far from improbable. These mint french nails were my obsession, until I finally had to take them off by myself. Social distancing has turned into an opportunity to rejuvenate my nails and give them the break they need. See how I’m properly caring for my nails during quarantine.

EASY TIPS FOR STRONG NATURAL NAILS

REMOVE GELS

To remove soft gel extensions, clip the Aprés nails down to your natural nails, and then file through the top coat. Soak each fingertip by placing acetone on a piece of cotton ball and wrapping in aluminum foil. Let the nails soak for 15-20 minutes. Once the gel is lifted from the nail, scrap off the excess with an orange wood stick and buff to remove any residue.

SHAPE YOUR NAILS

The first step to an at-home mani is to trim and file your nails. Regularly shaping your nails will help avoid breakage and splitting. Prioritize the health of your nails over length. I also recommend carrying a nail file in your bag, to file whenever needed, to keep edges smooth.

USE A NAIL STRENGTHENER

Whether your nails are already healthy or you want to boost weak, brittle nails, a nail strengthener will be your best friend. Apply at least twice a week for optimal benefits. I’ve been using OPI Nail Envy for years and definitely recommend it.

CARE FOR YOUR CUTICLES

To promote nail growth, don’t forget about your cuticles! The health of your cuticles directly contributes to the overall strength of your nails. Apply cuticle oil daily to soften nail beds — I always apply it right before bed to let it sink in overnight. For a clean, polished look, moisturize and push back cuticles with a cuticle pusher. In addition, use a nail nippers to trim away dead skin.

KEEP HANDS MOISTURIZED

The simplest tip for stronger nails is to keep your hands as hydrated as possible. Applying a clean hand lotion often will maintain plump skin and give added moisture to your cuticles.
