It’s no secret facial massage has been a trending practice in the beauty community as of late. As much of a spotlight it’s received, it hasn’t been given the attention for no reason. Gua sha is one of the many methods of facial massage that, basically, is a workout for your face. It’s also what many refer to as “natural botox” (we love that). The sculpting technique has not only been added to my at-home regime, but it’s been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years.
Gua sha works to activate your lymphatic system—increasing circulation while draining toxics. The key is moving slowly while pressing lightly. You want this to be gentle. To help the stone glide across your face, always prep your skin with a facial oil first. This will build hydration and plumpness. Make sure your skin is clean. Performing gua sha after your skincare routine will help all of the products you applied beforehand absorb into the skin. Use 6-10 drops of facial oil and pat into the skin, applying it down the neck as well.
Start at the base of the neck and work your way up. Move in an upward, outward motion. Doing this creates lift. Use the tool to pull the skin, not push, holding the tool flat. For optimal results, do 5-10 movements on each area. After every time you reach your hairline, wiggle the tool. View a very accurate, simplistic diagram to follow here. The slow, intentional movements leaves you with a toned, sculpted look.
I’m currently loving the Makür Natural Glow Facial Oil. It’s non-toxic and only contains eight beneficial ingredients: grapeseed oil, lavendar oil, orange peel, juniper berry oil, clove oil, geranium oil, clary sage oil, and tea trea oil. Unlike using essential oils directly on the skin (that could cause major sensitivity), this product is formulated with minimal levels to instead promote an overall healthier complexion.
I love doing this facial oil massage method to ease tension and just give myself a relaxing at-home pampering. Making this a habit in my routine allows me to pause and focus on myself. With regular practice, gua sha will help to prevent wrinkles and make your skin naturally glow. After each treatment, drink water consistently throughout the day to help drain the toxins.
Gua sha is a relaxing experience. Move slowly, take deep breaths, and enjoy some much-needed me-time.
